Comptroller General Lindsay C. Warren, appearing before the Mead Committee today, said that "everybody and his brother," apparently encouraged by laxity of Federal War Profit Renegotiation laws, "were out to get the Government during the lush war years." Henry A. Wallace told Congress today that President Truman's preparedness program would set off an armaments race leading inevitably to "unnecessary war." Mr. Wallace appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee. From: Beth Gore.

Commodore James K. Vardaman Jr., President Harry S. Truman's nominee to be a member of the Federal Reserve Board, denied that he was in any way connected with the failure of the Vardaman Shoe Company of St. Louis, Missouri. The President's Naval Aide endeavored to show the Senate Committee that he was not in operating control of the company at the time it was placed in receivership in 1942 or several months previously. General Alexander A. Vandegrift, the fighting Marine Commandant, appearing before a Senate Committee today, strongly opposed the merger of the Army and the Navy into a single department. From: Beth Gore.

General A. A. Vandegrift, head of the U.S. Marines, told a surprised Senate committee today that proposed unification of the Armed Services would reduce the Marine Corps to "military impotence" and strip it of "everything but name." Vandegrift was the first high active officer in Armed Service to oppose provisions of President Truman's unification program. From: Beth Gore.

Office of Price Administration Administrator Paul Porter testified before the House Banking and Currency Committee that if price lines can be held another 12 months the danger of crippling inflation will be past.
