Mr. Beverly Baxter, English newspaper correspondent (Mr. Charles Ross) Mr. Greville Poke (Ambassador Douglas wrote the President that Mr. Baxter, a personal friend of his, is coming to U. S. to lecture, and that he (Douglas) hoped the President would see Baxter, who would probably want to write some- thing about the President. Ambassador Douglas said, "he is a good citizen who abandoned the luxuries and easy life of Canada for the rigors and austerity of frontier life in England". Mr. Matthew Connelly cleared this with the Department of State.)
Rabbi Leo Baeck Dr. Maurice N. Eisendrath (When Edward Jacobson saw the President about a month ago, he left with the President a letter addressed to Jacobson by Irvin Fane, re Rabbi Baeck, formerly of Germany, now resident of London. Dr. Baeck is President of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Before war was leading liberal rabbi of Germany, preferred to remain so long as there was "single Jew left there". In concentration camp for four years. Mr. Matthew Connelly had Mr. Woodward of the Sate Department check to see if the Rabbi had any political connections. The Palestine desk in the State Department had never heard of him)

(President Kimball of the USO wrote to the President in December, stating they would meet here where they had their origin, for their final meeting, and would like to conclude with an adjourment to the White House and a very brief word from the President. He stated, "The USO had its origin in Washington and its member agencies, representing the three great faiths, were brought into this cooperative relationship at the personal instigation of President Roosevelt in the White House.")
