Service and Sacrifice in Korea: Chaplain Emil J. Kapaun
This lesson is designed to give students a greater understanding of the Korean War through examining the experiences of a military chaplain, Capt. Emil J. Kapaun who was captured and later died from dysentery while being held as a POW.
This lesson was designed to provide the students with the exact articles found in the UN Declaration of Human Rights and the opportunity to analyze each article.
Group activity. Students in class use primary sources like Truman Doctrine speech, Marshall plan, and Iron Curtain speech to discuss foreign policy from US/USSR perspectives at the time of the Cold War.
Students will work in the computer lab to examine campaign methods of President Harry Truman during the 1948 campaign. They will compare these to methods being used by Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama in 2008.
After a short PowerPoint introducing the Berlin Blockade, the students will participate in a cooperative learning activity emphasizing the study of primary sources to increase understanding of Truman's decision to continue the Berlin Airlift.
Students will gain experiences in decision-making processes, analyzing primary source documents, technological research skills, and gain an understanding of President Truman's role in Civil Rights in America.
Students will be developing a CD with a compilation of jazz songs that best exemplifies the Jazz Era (1920s-1930s). They will create a CD cover, an insert with each song title, its lyrics, and justification for why the song was included in the album.
