Description

A group of African American track and field Olympic stars, in Washington for the annual Negro Football Game between Tennessee State and Wilberforce, called on President Harry S. Truman at the White House. Pictured in the Oval Office from left to right: Emma Reed, Olympian in long jump and high jump; Theresa Manuel, Olympian in 80 meter hurdles, 4x100 relay, and javelin; Audrey Patterson, Olympian in 100 meter race, 200 meter race, and 4 x 100 relay; President Truman; Nell Jackson, Olympian in 200 meter race and 4 x 100 relay; Alice Coachman, Olympic high jump champion, only U.S. woman to win a gold medal at the international games, and first black woman to win a gold medal in any sport at an Olympic games; and Mabel Walker, Olympian in 100 meter race and 4x100 relay team.
