J. finds itself with a problem on its hands in form of large tract of land in the Port of Newark, owned by the city and still in possession of the Army; stated that from information available to their city officials, Newark one of the few cities along Atlantic coast where Army still is in possession of such a large tract of land. Mr. Matthew Connelly spoke first to Gael Sullivan about this request. Sullivan accordingly phoned Mayor Murphy and then asked that Mr. Matthew Connelly grant their request for an appointment with the President.)

The President and the members of his party left Washington by plane for Key West Naval Base, Key West, Florida.
The President and his party arrived at Key West Naval Airfield, Key West, Florida. The President was greeted upon his arrival at the Boca Chica Airfield by Mayor Maitland Adams, of Key West, Florida, and Acting City Manager Edwin Trevor of the city of Key West, and a representative group of U. S. Naval Officers. Immediately after the ceremonies at the Boca Chica Airfield, the President's party motored directly to the U. S. Naval Submarine Base, arriving there at 1.35 p.m. The President remained in residence at the Commandant's Quarters, U. S. Naval Submarine Base, throughout the remainder of the day without any further scheduled activities.

The President, accompanied by Admiral William Leahy, Admiral James Foskett, General Harry Vaughan, General Wallace Graham, Mr. Stanley Woodward, and Mr. Charles Ross walked to the President's swimming beach located on the Submarine Base in the Vicinity of Fort Taylor. The President swam while at the beach and remained there until 11.30 a.m., at which time he departed from the beach and motored directly to the Commandant's Quarters. The President lunched at 1.00 p.m. with the members of his immediate party and Captain C. C. Adell, Commanding Officer of the U. S. Naval installations of Key West, as his guest. No further activity scheduled for the remainder of the day.

The President, accompanied by Admiral William Leahy, Admiral James Foskett, Dr. John R. Steelman, Mr. Stanley Woodward and Captain Adell walked from the Commandant's Quarters to Submarine U-2513 which was docked in front of the administration Building on the Submarine Base. In appropriate Naval ceremonies, the President was presented a scroll, a tie chain, and emblem for his "dive" aboard Submarine U-2513 on a previous visit. The President then presented two gold stars, and two bronze stars to Naval officers who has been selected for this honor and distinction. After the above ceremonies aboard the Submarine U-2513, the President, Admiral William Leahy, Dr. John R. Steelman, Mr. Stanley Woodward, Admiral James Foskett, and Mr. Charles Ross motored to the President's private bathing beach, arriving at 10.40 a.m. The official party swam and remained at the beach until 11.50 a.m. The President drove his personal car from the bathing beach to the Commandant's Quarters, arriving there at 11.55 a.m. The President lunched with members of his immediate party at 1.00 p.m. There were no further activities scheduled for the remainder of the day.

The President and his immediate party departed from the Commandant's Quarters, U.S. Naval Submarine Base, at 8.50 a.m., Saturday morning, December 6th, and motored to the Boca Chica Airport, arriving there at 9.14 a.m. The President and all members of his immediate party including Congressman Smathers boarded U.S. Army Plane 451 and were airbone at 9.25 a.m. enroute to Naples, Florida, to attend the dedication ceremonies of the Everglades National Park at Everglades, Florida. The President arrived at Everglades at 10.10 and made dedicatory address opening the Everglades National Park. The President and the Members of his party returned to the Boca Chica Airfield at Key West, Florida at 5.00 p.m.

The President, accompanied by Admiral William Leahy, Admiral James Foskett, General Harry Vaughan, General Wallace Graham and Secretary Charles Ross, motored to the chapel on the U. S. Naval Submarine Base, Key West, Florida, where he attended church services from 9.30 a.m. until 10.00 a.m. Following the services, the Presidential party returned to their quarters. At 11:00 a.m., the President motored to his private bathing beach where he remained until 12.00 noon. There were no further activities scheduled for the remainder of the day.

The Presidential party boarded an army plane at Boca Chica Airfield, Key West, Florida, at 10:30 a.m., at which time they were airborne for Washington, D.C., arriving at the National Airport, Washington, D.C. at 2:54 p.m. The President motored directly to the White House, arriving at 3:10 p.m.
