(At request of Joe Blythe - Is outstanding Baptist Minister and is to visit Bern, Switzerland, where he will take gifts from the city of New Bern, N.C., which was founded by a Bernese, who brought a colony from Europe in 1710. These two cities have exchanged gifts and have sent delegates from time to time to ceremonies and anniversaries in the respective cities. The Reverend Fryer will present to the President a gavel, engraved as follows "1710 Presented to Harry S. Truman, President of the United States 1948. This gavel was made from a part of a huge cypress tree still standing in New Bern and was known to be standing at the time Swiss settlers first landed in New Bern in 1710. Presented for the City of New Bern, etc., etc".}
