Nephew of Harry S. and Bess Truman

The papers of David F. Wallace are comprised of approximately sixty pages of documents, consisting primarily of correspondence from Bess and Harry S. Truman. A few letters are addressed to David F. Wallace's father, Fred (Bess Truman's youngest brother); his mother, Christine; and his wife, Linda. The collection is divided into two series: a Correspondence File, which is arranged alphabetically, and a Miscellaneous File.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of David F. Wallace are comprised of approximately sixty pages of documents, consisting primarily of correspondence from Harry S. and Bess Truman to their nephew. A few of the letters are addressed to David F. Wallace's father, Fred (Bess Truman's youngest brother); his mother, Christine; and his wife, Linda. The collection is divided into two series: a Correspondence File, which is arranged alphabetically, and a Miscellaneous File.

The bulk of the Correspondence File contains letters and notes from both Bess and Harry S. Truman to the Wallaces. Harry Truman's letters to David are general in nature, expressing gratitude for David's remembrances and well-wishes. Several of the letters refer to various business ventures that David had proposed for his uncle and favors he had requested from him. In his letters, Truman provides little information about these matters, making statements such as "the very thing you wrote me about" or "it is not going to be possible for me to do what you wrote me about." The Family Correspondence File of the Harry S. Truman Post Presidential Papers contains David F. Wallace's original letters to Harry Truman and should be consulted in conjunction with this collection.

Bess Truman's letters to David and his wife Linda are generally thank you notes and holiday greetings. The papers also include brief notes to Christine Wallace that once accompanied checks from the Trumans.

The Correspondence File also includes thank you notes, holiday greetings, and general correspondence to Fred Wallace from Senator Clinton Anderson, Oscar L. Chapman, Senator Earl C. Clements, H. G Crim, John F. Curry, Victor R. Messall, and W. Stuart Symington.

The Miscellaneous File contains tax bills from 1940 and 1941 relating to the estate of George P. Gates. Gates was the grandfather of Bess Truman and the great-grandfather of David F. Wallace.
