President Harry S. Truman spoke at the Jackson Day Dinner at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC, at 10:15 p.m. His opening words "Mr. Chairman" referred to Postmaster General Robert E. Hannegan, who also served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. The address was carried on a nationwide radio broadcast.
