Political Cartoon, "It was Right Here When I Left for St. Louis!"

This is a photograph of a political cartoon by Jim Berryman for the Washington Evening Star. President Harry S. Truman is standing behind a desk, saying, "It was right here when I left for St. Louis!" Standing beside him is William Boyle (left) and John Steelman (right), sweating and looking through a file cabinet and emptying a trash container. Kneeling on the floor are Charles Ross and General Harry Vaughan. Vaughan is pointing at a small creature coming out of a hole in the floor.

President Harry S. Truman (second from left) greets Senator and Democratic National Committee Chairman J. Howard McGrath (left) upon his arrival at the Little White House, Key West, Florida. He flew to Key West to join President Truman on a post-election vacation. Also present is Assistant Press Secretary Eben Ayers (third from left) and Assistant to the Democratic National Committee Chairman William Boyle (fourth from left, partly obscured). Others are unidentified.

In the back seat of the car are Senator J. Howard McGrath, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, (right) and Mr. William M. Boyle, Assistant to the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, (second from right) after they arrive in Key West, Florida from Washington, D.C. They were met at Boca Chica Airfield by Naval Aide to the President Captain Robert Dennison (front seat of car). Their airplane can be seen in the background. They flew to Key West to join President Harry S. Truman on a post-election vacation. All others are unidentified.
