W. Averell Harriman While on 1959 Tour of the Soviet Union

Exterior view with W. Averell Harriman standing in suit by a body of water. It is believed that he was in or near Stalinabad, Tajikistan at the time. Charles Thayer in his typewritten account of the trip states: "From there we went to the 'lake', an artificial body of water much boasted about by officials, which is about waist deep with muddy water. The sandy shoreline was thick with Sunday bathers and the water itself hardly less populated." Charles W. Thayer accompanied Harriman as a guide and confidant on the trip which took place May 12 - June 26, 1959.
