Last minute escape from vessel torpedoed by German submarine. One of the most remarkable photographs ever taken depicting the last moments of a torpedoed vessel. The vessel has already sunk its bow into the waves, and her stern is slowly lifting out of the water. Men can be seem sliding down ropes as the last boat is pulling away. The splash of one of the men dropping into the sea can be seen to the left foreground. Donor: Frank Freidel, who obtained these photographs from the National Archives.
