General Jonathan M. Wainwright was presented with the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Truman

General Jonathan M. Wainwright being presented with the Congressional Medal of Honor in the Rose Garden at the White House on the occasion of General Wainwright's return to Washington after his release from imprisonment by the Japanese. The final stand on beleaguered Corregidor, for which he was in an important measure personally responsible, commanded the admiration of the nation's allies. (See also 66-1499-13.) Mrs. Anna Rosenberg, New York City, today became the first American citizen to receive the recently authorized Medal of Freedom. The medal was presented to Mrs. Rosenberg by Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson. The award was given on the recommendation of General of the Army Dwight D.
