Legislative hearings

Photograph of Chester Bowles

Chester Bowles, newly designated head of the Office of Economic Stabilization, warned Congress that the nation's economic system would be smashed "beyond hope of repair unless it extends price controls to keep the lid on the present inflationary dynamite." He urged the House Banking Committee to approve speedily a pending bill to continue the controls a year after the present June 30 expiration date. From: Beth Gore.

Dean Acheson with Spruille Braden

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee broke up in apparent disagreement today after hearing the views of Spruille Braden, newly nominated Assistant Secretary of State for Latin American Affairs, on the South American situation. Chairman Connally would make no comment on the meeting or on the fate of Braden's nomination. Braden, left, is shown with Acting Secretary of State Dean Acheson just before the meeting got underway.
