The Department of State Building, later known as the Old Executive Office Building

The massive gray stone building, shown here, housed the United States Department of State since 1875. Located on Pennsylvania Avenue next to the White House, it has been the scene of many formal ceremonies important in the foreign relations of the nation. With the removal of the central offices of the Department to more modern quarters, it will be occupied largely by the executive offices of the president.
