Lake Side Beach Photographed During W. Averell Harriman's 1959 Trip to the Soviet Union

Exterior view believed to be a beach alongside a lake in or near Stalinabad, Tajikistan. Charles Thayer in his typewritten account of the trip states: "From there we went to the 'lake', an artificial body of water much boasted about by officials, which is about waist deep with muddy water. The sandy shoreline was thick with Sunday bathers and the water itself hardly less populated." Charles W. Thayer accompanied Harriman as a guide and confidant on the trip which took place May 12 - June 26, 1959.
