The President spoke at 2 p.m. at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. His opening words "Mr. President" referred to Robert McLean, publisher of the Philadelphia Bulletin and president of the Associated Press, who served as chairman at the luncheon.

In his opening words he referred to Joseph M. Murphy, director of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association at Columbia University, and Vincent R. Impellitteri, Mayor of New York City. There were over 3,000 editors and student journalists in attendance, including delegates from 30 States and several foreign countries.
