Students will create a timeline of the period 1950-1989. This will be used at the beginning of the unit on the latter part of the 20th century. It will be an ongoing project as we work through the unit.
After studying articles and timelines on the Iran Hostage Crisis in groups, students will participate in a class discussion of the circumstances and causes of the crisis. Groups will study primary documents with the goal of providing a recommendation.
Students are required to analyze the presidential diaries of Lyndon B. Johnson. Research is combined with analysis to identify people and groups mentioned in the diary.
The students (in groups) will work through a series of primary source documents related to the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962. In using the primary sources, the students will confront the difficulties of negotiating at the highest levels.
The students will engage in a cooperative learning assignment on the Cuban Missile Crisis. They will work in groups to explore the presidential decision making and the US, Cuban and USSR perspectives on the 1962 Crisis.
