Description

President Harry S. Truman's remarks to members of the United Defense Fund. The President spoke at 3:50 p.m. in the Rose Garden at the White House. His opening words "Mr. Ambassador" referred to Francis P. Matthews, former Secretary of the Navy who had been sworn in as Ambassador to Ireland on August 1. The President previously made a statement establishing the United Defense Fund on January 5.
