Ambassador Edwin W. Pauley (left) confers with Senator Leverett Saltonstall (Republican from Massachusetts), Senate Naval Affairs Committee member, during a hearing into Pauley's fitness to be Undersecretary of the Navy. Saltonstall suggested on February 26, 1946, that Pauley withdraw his name.
