Description

Exterior view in what appears to be a street or market area probably in Uzbekistan. Various men in winter clothing are in view. According to Charles Thayer's curriculum vitae: "In 1955 I made an extended tour of European and Asiatic Russia and wrote a series for the Saturday Evening Post on post-Stalinist Soviet Union." Although not identified, this photograph is believed to have been taken during that trip. Thayer in his 1955 diary writes while visiting Bukhara, Uzbekistan, "There were quite a few maimed people on crutches and some beggars--some young but often men who went about chanting at passerby."
