Exterior view at what appears to be at a historic ruin with W. Averell Harriman seen second from the left with his wife Marie standing next to him. Location believed to be in Uzbekistan and in the city of Samarkand while the Harriman party were touring. Man on the left is unidentified but appears to be a native. Charles W. Thayer accompanied W. Averell Harriman as a guide and confidant on the trip which took place May 12 - June 26, 1959. Harriman went as a special foreign correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance (NANA). Trip visits included Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, Yalta, etc., as well as areas in Siberia and the Urals, and ended with a meeting with Nikita Khrushchev. Original 35mm negative.
