[The White House] July 23, 1947
Dear Bess:
I hit the jackpot yesterday on letters - two from you and one from Maggie. She said she was sure glad Bessie came home - she was tired commuting between three house.
That wedding between young Harris & Pen Gordon's daughter will require a present. I've known Gordon for twenty years and Harris is the son of the Adjutant General of the state. I've known him along time too. So you see.
That was a nice note from Bill Hassett. He's doing a little work for me at the hospital. I miss him sorely. Looks as if just as I get a working organization, and get the duties of each one outlined and working, something happens. That's true in the Cabinet too.
Young Franklin Roosevelt came in to see me on the Jewish question and we talked of other things also. He said he wanted me to understand that he and his mother were off Henry Wallace and that he'd go where ever I asked him to go and would do anything to help me and his mother would do the same. I think probably that's really what he come down to tell me.
The most perfect day you ever saw. I sent Margie some pictures of you and Mrs. Stewart taken on the little boat trip. I told her to show them to you but to hang on to them because I wanted them back. They'll be good for "black mail" some time.
Everybody seems to think I have the best of this Congressional session. I hope so anyway.
Lots of love Harry.
