[The White House] June 14, 1946

Dear Bess:

Your letter of Wednesday came to Rose yesterday and she delivered it to me. I was glad to get it. Saw Reathal at noon and she said she was attending to some things for you.

Of course I was glad the House upheld me. The Case Bill was bad legislation and a hodge-podge of the animosities of Harry Byrd and others who hated fair treatment for working people. All but the Hearst and Sabotage Press have agreed that the veto was calm and a well thought out analysis of the situation. The Maritime strike may stop today in which case I won't get any legislation at all.

OPA is a mess, brought on principally by the pinheads who have administered it. It seems the late President had a positive genius for picking inefficient administrators. His Court appointments are somewhat disgraceful too. I've about come to the conclusion that he wanted to do everything himself and get all the acclaim for successful accomplishment and then have a dumb cluck to take the blame for what failed.

Went to Hard Rock Club party at the Statler last night and had a good time. Lost twenty-six dollars, a quarter at a time, between 9:00 P.M. and midnight, but enjoyed the evening.

Hope everything is well with you. Kiss the baby for me.

Lots of love, Harry
