MEMORANDUM FOR S/S
The Secretary told me after Cabinet today that the Vice President had asked him about a report that the Australians have stopped assistance to the UN in Korea. The Vice President mentioned a report that they had stopped some troop replacements which were scheduled to go to Korea.
The Vice President said that he believed that this report stemmed from a statement which Senators Green and Ferguson made in connection with their recent trip to the Far East.
Mr. Acheson promised the Vice President that he would look into this matter and let him know as soon as possible about it.
Can someone ascertain whether this is sheer rumor or whether it has any basis in fact, and give us a full report on which a reply may be based to the Vice President. The Secretary will be seeing the Vice President at Cabinet on Monday afternoon. It might be well to have the memorandum prepared for him by that time and he can speak to the Vice President when he sees him.
