Memorandum of Telephone Conversation
Senator Knowland telephoned the Secretary this afternoon. He said he didn't want to bother the President but he hoped the Secretary would convey to the President when he saw him the Senator's commendation of a very fine speech, which seemed to strike a high level and fine spirit and in which there seemed opportunities to work out areas of agreement which are needed to meet the grave crisis we face. He said he was very favorably impressed and had so stated to the press and to some of his colleagues.
The Secretary said he would convey the message with very great pleasure, that he knew the President would be pleased that he thought this. The Secretary added that he was delighted that the Senator chose him to convey the message.
The Senator said further that the spirit of the message was fine and he thought that there was hope of working out something to present the kind of nation we are going to have to have to face the problems.
