DEPARTMENT OF STATE Memorandum of Conversation

DATE: January 2, 1951

SUBJECT: First Call of the Ambassador-designate of Ecuador

PARTICIPANTS: The Secretary The Ambassador-designate of Ecuador Señor Dr. Alfonso Moscoso, Minister plenipotentiary, Embassy of Ecuador John F. Simmons, Chief of Protocol

COPIES TO: S S/S S/S-PR ARA OSA

His Excellency Señor Don Luis Antonio Peñaherrera, newly appointed Ambassador of Ecuador, called on me today to present copies of his credentials and to request an appointment with the President.

After the usual exchange of courtesies, the Ambassador emphasized two points which he described as of particular significance on the occasion of his call, one, that he brought the personal greetings of the Ecuadoran President, His Excellency Galo Plaza, and two, that he wished to give me assurances of the complete solidarity of Ecuador in supporting the United States and the United Nations in these moments of great crisis.

I wished the Ambassador success in his mission and assured him that I should at all times be glad to go into any questions of particular interest between our two countries.

After some further general conversation, the Ambassador departed.
