Agency History Note

The Salary Stabilization Board was established as part of the Economic Stabilization Agency (ESA). The ESA was created by executive order as an independent agency under the authority of the Defense Production Act, on September 9, 1950. Its functions were to administer price ceiling and salary stabilization programs during the Korean War. The Salary Stabilization Board, the Office of Price Stabilization, the Wage Stabilization Board, and the Office of Rent Stabilization were among the constituent agencies supervised by the ESA.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

This collection contains materials that document the decisions made by the Salary Stabilization Board in regard to stabilizing salaries in a way that would remain consistent with the new controls being placed on wages, prices, and rents during the Korean War.

Included in the collection are the final report of the Salary Stabilization Board, issued on June 30, 1953, and an appendix to the report. The appendix contains a program operations manual from the Office of Salary Stabilization, which administered the Board's decisions; memorandums, letters, printed materials, reports, and regulations concerning the Board's activities; and a transcript of a meeting of the Board's Professional Sports Panel, in which the participants included baseball legend Ty Cobb and representatives of the major professional sports leagues.

The materials in this collection are duplicates of records at the National Archives and Records Administration in College Park, Maryland.
