The Permanent File was maintained by the White House staff as a component of the White House Central Files. It contains documents that in the judgment of the staff related to the operation of the White House Office, and furnished precedents for the day-to-day operations of the White House. The collection contains travel logs, movie scripts, sheet music, printed materials, architectural floor plans, renovation plans, legislative proposals, and itineraries for foreign dignitaries. The collection also includes correspondence relating to the White House Office with members of the White House staff, the Congress, the Cabinet, the Armed Services, and the American public.
Topics covered in the Permanent File range from the powers of the President to the functions of the White House telephone service, garage, swimming pool, and library. Many of the precedents concern such ceremonial matters as awards, seals, funerals, and wreath-layings.
