Description

The first in a series of four ¾” videotapes produced by the John F. Kennedy Library of a conference held there on 4/12/84: THE TRUMAN PRESIDENCY. Introduces the Truman Centennial Conference. Video quality poor. John Stewart, Director of Education at the Kennedy Library opening comments. Sheldon Stern with the Kennedy Library introduces an 8 minute segment of President Truman’s acceptance speech at the 1948 Democratic Convention (quality very poor, audio not understandable). Comments by Kennedy Library Director Dan Finn. Keynote Speaker is Clark Clifford, Special Counsel to President Truman. Discusses forming a new Cabinet and White House staff, Potsdam Conference, beginning of the Cold War, Truman Doctrine, NATO, Marshall Plan, Point Four Program and Berlin Airlift. Questions to Mr. Clifford not audible, but responses are. This is followed by the assembling of a panel for discussion. Audio spotty. Dr. Ben Zobrist (Truman Library Director) introduces each panel member. Clayton Fritchey, assistant to General George C. Marshall and then assistant to President Truman. He discusses the first day of the Truman Presidency and other matters. Tape ends during his speaking.
