Reel 1
0:00 | Harry S. Truman discusses problem he had with demobilization after World War II. “I had to tell the boys they couldn’t go home . . . they didn’t like it and neither did the people at home, but it had to be done . . . MacArthur needed men for the final assault against the Japanese.”
0:49 | “I had been through that situation in the first world war and I knew how they felt.” He discusses the tremendous pressure he was under from parents and other relatives to bring the troops home. At one point in his discussion, Mr. Truman imitates a childish voice asking to go home. “The President must not, under any circumstances, let pressure rule him.” The White House was getting better than 1,000 letters a day. This was probably used in preparation for MP81-5, “I Want my Daddy Back.”
