0:00   Harry S. Truman states that while we were negotiating with North Korea, General Douglas MacArthur invited the North Korean General to surrender. Mr. Truman asked General George Marshall to review his correspondence with MacArthur. General Marshall read the material, commenting "You should have fired the - - - two years ago." Mr. Truman stated he'd already decided "there could not be two Commanders-in-Chief." He sent a final message to MacArthur, relieving him of his command. There was much concern about the consequences of the firing. Mr. Truman states that because of MacArthur's distinguished military career of over forty years he didn’t want to have to fire him.
