Reel 1

0:00   Averell Harriman discusses the Chinese intervention in the Korean War. He comments on the tragedy of this development, detailing how President Truman had gone to Wake Island to discuss this possibility. General Douglas MacArthur had assured Mr. Truman that neither China or Russia would intervene. Mr. Harriman states he was with Mr. Truman and General MacArthur at Wake Island. Mr. Harriman also met with MacArthur to discourage him from meeting with Chiang Kai-shek. MacArthur was told President Truman didn't want any action taken that might touch off a war with the Chinese. Harriman emphasized to MacArthur that the United Nation's objective was to throw the North Korean Communists out of South Korea.
