Mr. Truman, seated at a desk, is speaking:
"I also antagonized a lot of people by recognizing the state of Israel when it was formed."
He goes on to describe seeing where the Jews were killed by Nazis at Potsdam, and mentions the slaughter of 6 million Jews. He wanted a homeland where they could operate. Arabs were moved out, but were compensated for the land they had to give up. Jews have a small but energetic republic, and they have accomplished much. A few years ago, they had a fuss with Egypt, and they drove the Egyptians back. If the President of the United States hadn't interfered, they'd have driven Nasser back to Sudan, where he belonged.
(Then, Mr. Truman laughs and comments that this won’t help diplomatic relations). |
