0:00   Harry S. Truman speaks about the Arab/Israeli conflict in 1948. He refers to Ernest Bevin's remarks as raw and ignominious, not helping Truman's Missouri good nature. Ernest Bevin was the British foreign minister who talked about President Truman's "meddling."
0:32   Mr. Truman states that in May 14, 1948, the British mandate was expiring and the "British had made up their minds they would not follow through."
0:32   The Arabs and Israelis were ready to go to war. Mr. Truman states he favored one more try to avert war. "I thought the United Nations was the proper place for this thing to be handled." He instructed Warren Austin, our United Nations representative, who was against the Jewish program. Mr. Truman favored the partition of Palestine into the Jewish and Arab states.
2:00   Mr. Truman states that he used to tell the Jews and Arabs that, "if the Bible was correct, they were first cousins and relatives and ought to be able to get along…" "When the hate generations are all dead, they will get along."
2:15   Mr. Truman says he wrote an assistant that he wished "God Almighty would give the children of Israel an Isaiah, the Christians a St. Paul, and the sons of Ishmael a peep at the Golden Rule."
