BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Walter H. Maloney was born in Glencoe, Wisconsin on April 6, 1885. He received his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1907 and became an attorney in Kansas City, Missouri. Active in local Democratic politics, Maloney was a friend and supporter of Harry S. Truman, and campaigned for Truman when he ran for Jackson County Judge, U.S. Senator, Vice President and President.

From 1935 to 1939, Maloney served on the National Bituminous Coal Commission in Washington. He practiced law in Washington for the rest of his life, specializing in Indian claims. Maloney died in Washington on November 14, 1967.

Maloney's wife, Madeline F. Maloney, was a close friend of Mrs. Truman and a member of the Democratic Women's National Council. She also performed as a pianist and singer at such events as the Inaugural Governor's Dinner in 1941. She died in Washington on June 13, 1983, at the age of 86.

COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Walter H. and Madeline F. Maloney consist mostly of letters written to them by President Harry S. Truman and Mrs. Truman. The letters are of a personal nature, and have little relevance to politics or public policy.

Included in the papers are invitations to Presidential Inaugurations and events at the White House; many handwritten letters from Bess Truman to Mrs. Maloney; a few letters from President Truman to Mr. Maloney; and other letters received from such persons as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Margaret Truman, Harold Ickes, J. Edgar Hoover, James Farley; and White House Secretary Edith Helm.

The collection consists of copies of original documents that were retained by the Maloney family. The copies were donated to the Truman Library in 1989 and originally opened for research as part of the Library's Miscellaneous Historical Documents Collection (MHDC 660).
