Russell P. Andrews was a Special Assistant to the Assistant to the President, John Steelman, from 1950-1952. Prior to working for Steelman, Andrews worked as a Legislative Assistant to Roger W. Jones, Deputy Director at the Bureau of the Budget. After completing his work for Steelman in 1952, Andrews returned to the Bureau of the Budget. Andrews died in approximately 1982.
The papers of Russell P. Andrews consist of papers and memorabilia pertaining to Mr. Andrews’s tenure as White House staff member and as special assistant to John Steelman, the Assistant to the President, from 1950-1952.
The collection consists of letters, memorandums, and memorabilia from Mr. Andrew’s work under Mr. Steelman. Included are two reports by Mr. Andrews “Wilderness Sanctuary” and “The Re-Americanization of Foreign Service Officers” written for the Inter-University Case Program. The accompanying folder title list is in alphabetical order pertinent to the enclosed items.
The collection also includes a bound copy of a 1942 report by Andrews and Rowland Egger on government reorganization in Bolivia, four letters from Harry S. Truman to Andrews, a 1950 memorandum from Andrews to Truman proposing assignment of foreign service officers to duties in the United States, photographs of Andrews and other members of the White House staff, and a cigarette lighter bearing the image of President Truman.
