The papers of Robert A. Lovett include the contents of five scrapbooks of chronologically-arranged newspaper clippings and photographs. The clippings date from 1940 to 1943, and focus on Lovett's career as Assistant Secretary of War for Air during World War II. They cover such topics as the expansion of the aviation industry in the United States, calls for an independent Air Force, investigations of defense spending by the Truman Committee, the growing importance of air power, and the progress of the war. Photographs from the scrapbooks show Lovett in airplanes, speaking with colleagues, and receiving awards.
Also in the collection is a list of books that Lovett gave to the Truman Library. These items have been transferred to the Library's Book Collection.
This collection of Lovett's papers contains no information on his career after 1949. Material relating to Lovett's subsequent service as Deputy Secretary of Defense and Secretary of Defense during the Korean War can be found in the papers of Harry S. Truman.
