This collection is almost entirely made up of newspaper clippings from two scrapbooks compiled by Robert Gulledge, dating from 1941 to 1942. The clippings document Senator Harry S. Truman’s activities as chairman of the Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program.

Robert E. Gulledge worked as a mail boy in the office of Senator Harry S. Truman. His father was a friend of Harry Vaughn, Senator Truman’s secretary. After Truman became President in 1945, Gulledge found a job at the White House. In 1948, he transferred to the St. Louis office of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. He later worked for the Army Corp of Engineers.
This collection is almost entirely made up of newspaper clippings from two scrapbooks compiled by Robert Gulledge, dating from 1941 to 1942. The clippings document Senator Harry S. Truman’s activities as chairman of the Special Committee to Investigate the National Defense Program (popularly known as the Truman Committee).
In addition to articles about Truman and the national defense effort during World War II, the clippings include editorial cartoons and photos of Truman and his family.
Also included in the collection is the sheet music for the song “Send For Me,” inscribed to Gulledge by the composer, Pete Johnson, and dated 1943.
Another item in the collection is a memo from Lela Stiles of the White House staff to Rose Conway, President Truman’s secretary, dated June 29, 1951. The memo indicates that Gulledge left the scrapbooks in the White House, where he was employed from 1945 to 1948, and that they were later transferred to the storeroom.
