The Congressional Quarterly was founded in 1945 by Nelson and Henrietta Poynter with the vision that Americans should understand the implications of government presented in a nonpartisan and accurate manner. The Congressional Quarterly has provided local newspapers around the United States with information about Congressional activity to educate local readers, and is a leading source of news about the United States Congress.
The Records of the Congressional Quarterly consists of editorials and columns from newspapers in the United States pertaining to President Truman and the Truman Presidency. These newspaper clippings were complied in the morgue of the Congressional Quarterly and were later donated to the Truman Library.
The articles from Truman's Presidency include opinions on: civil rights; labor; racism in Washington and the nation; World War II; the Whistle Stop Tour; the 80th Congress; Senator Theodore Bilbo of Mississippi; the Succession Bill; Truman's Cabinet; Tom Pendergast; Presidential vetoes; and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
A majority of the editorials and columns are critical of the Truman Presidency, specifically with reference to Truman's vetoes of bills, his attacks on the 80th Congress, and his Cabinet appointments.
The Truman Library also has the Kansas City Star Clippings Collection and the Records of the Democratic National Committee: Library Clippings File, both dealing with President Truman and the Truman Presidency.
