COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The papers of Raphael W. Green consist of correspondence, photographs, memos, newspaper clippings, an annotated calendar, printed material, and other material relating primarily to Green’s activities as Secretary for the United States Reparations Mission survey of Korea and Manchuria (Northeast China) in 1946, headed by Edwin W. Pauley. The collection is comprised of one series, a Subject File, arranged alphabetically by folder title.

The correspondence primarily consists of personal letters from Green to his mother during his work overseas in 1946. The letters only briefly mention his work with the reparations team, and instead focus on general impressions of food, clothing, entertainment, and transportation during his journeys through Japan, China and Korea. One letter posted from Washington, D.C. notes his urgent work in completing the Korean and Manchurian reports, which were to go to President Truman. A small number of professional letters are included, including a letter from Pauley thanking Green for his work on the mission.

Also included is typed memo dated May 2, 1946 from the U.S. Reparations Mission to its staff, outlining the staff’s instructions and assigned duties for the mission. The memo also provides guidelines for staff behavior during the mission.

The collection contains photographs of the 1946 mission, including a bound photo album that several members of the mission staff received, as well as other photos of Green at different locales. Also included is a certificate of official commendation to Green for his service to the mission.

Additional materials include a roster of mission staff, and a transcript of an interview of Pauley by Al Leitch, an ABC Washington correspondent for the show “Headline Editions” (July 23, 1946).

Among the printed materials are an article entitled “Stripped by War and the Soviets Manchuria Faces Huge Rebuilding Job,” a foreign language booklet (probably about calligraphy), a booklet about Tokyo, and clippings of newspaper articles about the Pauley Mission.

The Truman Library also has an oral history interview with Raphael Green (conducted in 1991), an oral history interview with Edwin W. Pauley, and the papers of Edwin W. Pauley. (With the exception of one item—Pauley’s unpublished autobiography—the Pauley Papers are closed for processing as of 2007.)
