The Papers of Ralph N. Stohl mostly date from his service as Director of Administration in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and as Director of the Office of Domestic Security Programs in the Department of Defense, from 1947 to 1955. The papers include correspondence, organizational charts, graphs, memoranda, handwritten notes, reports, and printed materials.
The collection is organized in one series, a Subject File. The majority of the papers in the collection focus on the Office of the Secretary of Defense and Stohl’s role as Director of Administration. The papers also include information on the National Security Act of 1947. Among the papers relating to this subject are memoranda from meetings about the National Security Act, background reports, charts displaying the structure of the Department of Defense, and papers relating to the passage of the act itself.
Much of the collection consists of memoranda, charts, correspondence, handwritten notes, and manuals concerning the organization and administration of the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Department of Defense. The collection contains little information about Stohl’s service as Director of the Office of Domestic Security Programs during the Eisenhower administration.
Other manuscript collections at the Truman Library relating to the Defense Department include the papers of John H. Ohly and the papers of A. Robert Ginsburgh.
