COLLECTION DESCRIPTION

The Papers of Leonard Lyons consist of twenty-one handwritten letters and one typed and signed letter from Bess Truman to Mr. Lyons. The contents of the letters consist mostly of thanks to Mr. Lyons for sending Mr. and Mrs. Truman large quantities of reading materials from 1956 to 1971.

In some of the letters, Mrs. Truman refers to her arthritis, and how much she and Mr. Truman enjoyed the books Mr. Lyons sent them. She often mentions Lyons's wife, Sylvia, and observes that Mr. and Mrs. Lyons are often traveling to far-off places.

Only one of the letters was dated by Mrs. Truman, and this is the typed letter. The letters have been arranged chronologically according to the postmarked envelopes that appear to correspond with the letters.

Correspondence between Harry S. Truman and Leonard Lyons from 1953 to 1971 can be found in the Name File of the Post-Presidential Papers, filed under "Lyons, Leonard."
