Myron M. Cowen was born on January 25, 1898, in Logan, Iowa. He graduated from Drake University of Des Moines in 1918. From 1919 to 1926, he practiced law in Des Moines. From 1926 to 1933, he was the commissioner for the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington D.C. He continued his legal practice from 1935 to 1948 in Washington D.C. He served as U.S. Ambassador to Australia from 1948 to 1949, U.S. ambassador to Philippines from 1949 to 1952, and U.S. ambassador to Belgium from 1952 to 1953. From 1953 to 1965, he practiced law in Washington, D.C. He died on November 1, 1965, in Washington, D.C.

The papers of Myron M. Cowen consist of appointment diaries, correspondence, financial records, itineraries, invitations, memorandums, newspaper clippings, press releases, printed materials, reports, speeches, and telegrams primarily related to Myron Cowen’s service as U.S. Ambassador to Australia, the Philippines, and Belgium, his personal life, and his career as a lawyer. The collection is arranged in two series, a Subject File and a Speech File.
The Subject File consists of appointment diaries, correspondence, financial records, and other materials primarily relating to Cowen’s career as an Ambassador from 1948 to 1953. The series includes correspondence with President Harry S. Truman, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Douglas MacArthur, Secretary of State Dean Acheson, General Omar Bradley, and Governor Thomas Dewey, and contains information about the countries in which Cowen served as Ambassador, the Japanese Peace Treaty, and Cowen’s travels.
The Speech File consists of speeches, speech drafts, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and printed materials primarily related to Myron Cowen’s speeches during his diplomatic career.
