The papers of Joseph J. O’Connell, Jr. include records of visitors and transcripts or summaries of telephone calls concerning the Department of the Treasury and O’Connell’s work there between May 1944 and July 1947. The collection is arranged in a single series, the Calendar File.
The papers provide detailed information about O’Connell’s work as General Counsel in the Treasury Department. Many of his daily appointment schedules are annotated to indicate the purpose of the meeting and the subjects discussed. The transcripts and summaries of O’Connell’s telephone conversations reflect his involvement in legal matters facing the Treasury Department and other official business.
The Truman Library also has papers of Treasury Secretary John W. Snyder, as well as the papers of Thomas J. Lynch and Stephen J. Spingarn, who served under O’Connell during his tenure as General Counsel.
