The James S. Earley papers are primarily comprised of letters, memoranda and reports written by him and other officials in the Office of Price Administration (OPA) during World War II.
The correspondence in this collection mostly relates to inflation, rationing, subsidies, and other issues associated with the wartime economy in the U.S. This material reflects Earley's work as an economist with the OPA from 1942 to 1945. The correspondence from 1945 pertains to Earley's service during that year as Adviser on British Commonwealth Financial Affairs at the State Department. Included in this material is information on postwar financial and trade arrangements between the U.S. and the United Kingdom.
Also included in these papers are a series of statements made by Earley regarding inflation and the control of railroad rates in Canada, Germany and the U.S. during World War II, along with some press clippings on the negotiations that resulted in a large U.S. loan to the British after the war.
