The Papers of James C. Dunn consist of the contents of a scrapbook concerning his service as U.S. Ambassador to Italy. Except for a few items, the contents date from 1951.
The collection mainly consists of press clippings (some in English, most in Italian) regarding Dunn's actions as Ambassador. The death of Admiral Forrest P. Sherman, the U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, in Naples, Italy, and the subsequent trip of Dunn to Naples are covered in clippings and photographs. Massive flooding in Italy is documented in clippings and a press release. Another press release and more clippings tell of Dunn receiving the "Distinguished Service Award" from the State Department.
The majority of photographs in this collection show Dunn attending dinners and ceremonies with fellow dignitaries. Invitations, guest lists, programs, and memorabilia are also included.
Correspondence and press clippings in the collection concern a visit by Italian Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi to the United States. Speeches by Ambassador Dunn in Italian also appear in the collection.
