Irene C. Calkin was born in July 1909 and died in July 1987. During World War II, she lived in El Monte, California, and compiled scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and other items relating to the war.
This collection is made up of six scrapbooks compiled by Irene C. Calkin. The scrapbooks date from December 1941 to 1966 and cover a number of topics concerning World War II, including combat news, events on the home front, and the war’s aftermath.
The collection is almost entirely made up of newspaper clippings, which cover a wide range of war-related topics. Also included are other printed materials and a few pieces of correspondence.
Other items in the collection include certificates issued to Harold Calkin in recognition of his training courses and volunteer service during World War II, and war ration books assigned to Harold and Irene Calkin.
The World War II Collection at the Truman Library contains a number of similar donations of historical materials relating to the war.
