The Edwin A. Halsey Papers mainly consist of copies of correspondence between Halsey and Harry S. Truman, dating from 1934 to 1944. The documents are arranged chronologically in a single series, the Correspondence File. The correspondence in the collection mostly relates to Truman's campaigns for the Senate in 1934 and 1940.
As Secretary-Treasurer of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Halsey was in contact with Truman and his campaign headquarters, providing assistance whenever he could. The collection also contains a number of letters to potential supporters from Truman or his campaign staff. A smaller amount of correspondence between Halsey and Truman relates to Truman's duties in the Senate. The collection also includes some press clippings about Truman and Truman campaign literature.
Several boxes of papers belonging to Edwin A. Halsey were discovered by the Senate Historical Office in 1977. From these papers, Richard A. Baker, the Historian of the Senate, provided the Truman Library with copies of all documents that related to Harry S. Truman. The copies were originally opened for research as part of the Miscellaneous Historical Documents Collection [MHDC 287]. They were designated as a separate collection, the Edwin A. Halsey Papers, in 2012. A much larger collection of Edwin A. Halsey Papers is available for research at the Library of Congress.
Related collections at the Truman Library include the Leslie Biffle Papers. Biffle succeeded Halsey as Secretary of the Senate in 1945.
