Alonzo L. Hamby was born on January 30, 1940 in Missouri. He is a professor of history at Ohio University and has written many works on the life and times of Harry S. Truman, including Man of the People: A Life of Harry S. Truman, Beyond the New Deal: Harry S. Truman and American Liberalism, and Harry S. Truman and the Fair Deal.
The papers of Alonzo L. Hamby include correspondence, interview notes, newspaper clippings, and other items relating primarily to the author's research for his biography Man of the People: A Life of Harry S. Truman (1995). The collection is arranged in one series, a Subject File.
The collection contains correspondence and notes of interviews with a number of friends, relatives, advisers, and acquaintances of Harry S. Truman, such as Rufus Burrus, Ilus Davis, Donald Dawson, Leon Keyserling, Margaret Truman Daniel, J. C. Truman, and May Wallace.
The collection also includes Hamby's correspondence relating to his own research and that of other scholars, newspaper clippings concerning individuals involved in the Truman administration and the life of Harry S. Truman, and articles about Truman written by Hamby and others.
The Truman Library also has the papers of Thomas Fleming, who assisted Margaret Truman Daniel in writing biographies of her mother and father, and the papers of other Truman biographers and scholars, including Jonathan Daniels and Steve Neal.
