Alfred Jack Nuthall served in various positions during his long career with the United States Army and the United States Air Force, from April 1942 to December 1962. From August 1951 until January 1953, he served as Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense, Anna M. Rosenberg. Nuthall rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before his retirement in 1962.
The papers of Alfred J. Nuthall mostly relate to his career with the United States Army and the United States Air Force. The collection consists of a biographical timeline of his military career, correspondence, invitations, a newspaper article, and a large number of photocopied photographs.
The biographical timeline charts Nuthall's career in the military from 1942 to 1962. The correspondence in the collection mostly concerns the security clearance of K. R. Pusta, an ex-U.S. Army officer, and does not relate directly to Nuthall.
The invitations are to a variety of events in 1960, when Nuthall and his wife were living in the Washington, D.C. area: mostly cocktail parties and receptions hosted by foreign ambassadors and military attaches.
The collection also contains a February 1, 1965 article from a U.S. Air Force newspaper regarding the retirement of General Curtis E. LeMay.
The collection includes photocopies of about ninety photographs of various events and subjects, with the majority focusing on Anna M. Rosenberg, her activities as Assistant Secretary of Defense, and her trip to Korea and Japan in October 1951. Also included are two photographs inscribed to Nuthall by Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall and his successor in that office, Robert Lovett. The original photographs have been transferred to the Truman Library's audiovisual collection.
